b.well Launches Free “Kill the Clipboard” Scanner, Letting Providers Scan a Patient’s Health Record Presented as a QR Code at the Point of Care

The free tool scans that QR code and files the record directly into a provider’s existing system, no clipboard and no manual entry required

BALTIMORE, Oct. 7, 2026 / — b.well Connected Health, the infrastructure for AI-powered consumer experiences, today announced the launch of its Kill the Clipboard Scanner, a free tool that lets front-desk staff scan a patient’s QR code and file their health record and insurance information automatically. The scanner carries no license fee, no subscription, and no per-scan charge, and it is also available as free, open source software for organizations that would rather host it themselves.

That QR code, known in the industry as a SMART Health Card or SMART Health Link, works much like a boarding pass. A patient pulls it up on their phone at check in, and instead of a seat assignment, it carries their medical history and insurance details, generated by an app they have already chosen to use. A growing number of patients can now arrive with one, thanks to a federal initiative that CMS calls “kill the clipboard” and has described as “a movement, not a mandate,” a voluntary push toward replacing paper intake forms with secure digital records patients bring with them.

“Patients are increasingly arriving at the front desk with their entire health record already in their pocket, and many practices still hand them a clipboard,” said Imran Qureshi, Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Officer at b.well Connected Health. “CMS built the on-ramp with the Medicare App Library. We built the off-ramp: a way for any front desk, on any device, to turn that code into filed intake in seconds, for free, without waiting on an EHR upgrade.”

A paper clipboard forces staff to re-key information that already exists elsewhere in verified form, a slow, error-prone process that leaves them transcribing clinical details they aren’t trained to interpret while the patient waits. Because these codes often carry insurance information too, a single scan can also catch coverage changes that would otherwise go unnoticed until a claim is denied.

How It Works

  • The patient shows their QR code, usually on their phone.
  • Staff scan it with a webcam, scanner, tablet, or phone already on hand.
  • The scanner verifies the record and displays it on screen.
  • Staff review it and confirm with one click.
  • The record files automatically into the provider’s system, whether that’s Epic, another EHR, or cloud storage.

The hosted version runs in an environment that meets HIPAA requirements and carries HITRUST CSF certification. Each record unlocks using a key inside the patient’s own code, not one b.well holds, and every account requires multi-factor authentication or a passkey.

Kill the Clipboard Scanner is available now, at no cost. Organizations can sign up for the hosted version at ktc.bwell.com/web. For more information, contact us at bwell.com.
